Build Better Training | Safeguarding, Human Risk & Workforce

The Complete Human Safeguarding & Operational Readiness Partner

Traditional safety stops at hard hats and scaffolding. Build Better Training addresses the key factor behind every site outcome: Human Reliability.

As a CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO) founded by a former Metropolitan Police Detective Inspector with 17 years in critical incident management, we apply an investigative lens to site safety, workforce welfare, and human risk. Our modules directly support ISO 45001 compliance by giving construction leaders practical systems to systematically manage psychosocial risks and safeguarding liabilities on site.

The Build Better Strategy

  • 1. Human Risk & Safeguarding Detection: Spot and handle hidden site risks—including modern slavery, domestic abuse disclosures, cognitive fatigue, and acute stress.
  • 2. Operational Safety & Site Leadership: Equip site managers and supervisors as a first line of defence to read subtle behavioral red flags, assess task suitability, de-escalate tension, and handle sensitive disclosures.
  • 3. ISO 45001 & CITB Standards: Delivered by a CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO) that provides auditable evidence of workforce engagement and proactive mental health risk management.

Commercial Impact

Fewer near-misses. ISO 45001 compliance. Protected supply chains. We safeguard your workforce, protect your corporate reputation, and keep projects delivering on time and on budget.

Why employ Build Better Training?

The Hard Reality: Our Industry is in critical overload

The construction industry is facing a crisis that high-vis vests and site inductions aren't solving. While physical safety protocols have improved, the mental and physiological "structural integrity" of our workforce is at a breaking point.

The Data

The numbers reveal a sector under extreme pressure:

  • The Ultimate Cost: Suicide kills more construction workers each year than site accidents.
  • The 2025 Toll: Over 700 construction workers died by suicide in 2025—one of the highest rates of any sector (ONS).
  • Systemic Stress: 90% of CIOB members reported high stress levels in 2025 research.
  • Personal Impact: 34% of tradespeople say their work is actively harming their mental health.
  • Economic Drain: 5.1 million working days are lost annually to poor mental health in the industry.
  • The Support Gap: Fewer than one third of tradespeople have access to employer-funded counseling or helplines.

A Downward Trend

In 2020, the CIOB conducted a landmark survey on mental health in the industry; they repeated this survey in 2025. The findings are clear:

"The frequency of construction industry workers experiencing poor wellbeing is on the increase, with many more reporting feelings such as stress, depression, anxiety, and poor concentration on a daily or weekly basis."

Why Traditional Methods are Failing

Despite increased awareness and corporate initiatives, the data shows that the current trajectory isn't working. Awareness is not the same as intervention.

At Build Better, we believe the industry doesn't need more posters in the canteen; it needs a tactical, forensic approach to human reliability. We don't just "talk" about mental health; we identify the physiological triggers of stress, the physical mechanics of fatigue, and the leadership failures that allow "critical overload" to go unnoticed.

It’s time to stop managing the fallout and start fixing the system

Why We Focus on Supervisors: The Advanced Site Vision

"In my 17 years within the Metropolitan Police, we recognised a fundamental truth: the most influential role in any high-stakes organisation is the frontline supervisor. They dictate the standards, enforce compliance, and are the first to see when an individual is failing to cope under pressure.

The construction industry is no different. Your Site Supervisors and Managers are the operational spine of your project. The “Advanced Site Vision” Training Program is designed specifically for them. We equip your leadership with the tactical skills to maintain high-level situational awareness. This training teaches supervisors to monitor the focus, fatigue, and presence of their teams as actively as they manage physical hazards, ensuring human risk is detected and mitigated before it impacts the project. When your supervisors know how to detect and de-escalate human risk, your entire site is protected.

Delivery Format: Hybrid in-person site visits plus regular remote support

Best Suited To: Tier 1 and larger Tier 2 contractors running multi-site programmes, where senior leadership wants embedded, measurable wellbeing infrastructure as part of their health and safety culture.

Investment: £11000 (covers up to three sites. Contact us to discuss single-site or bespoke arrangements)

🌸 Continuing the Partnership: Retainer Program

Investment: £2500 per month (Minimum 3-month commitment)

Meet Victoria: From the Front Line to the Construction Line

My Qualifications & Approach

Hi, I’m Victoria.

Build Better is founded on 17 years of frontline experience as a Detective Inspector, a career spent reading people, identifying risk before it escalates, and making high-stakes decisions under pressure.

During my career as a Senior Detective, I was called to construction sites to lead investigations following fatal accidents. In these cases, my role required me to formally close the site, halting operations entirely to allow for a forensic examination.

While these events are infrequent, their impact is absolute. Beyond the immediate tragedy, there is a profound ripple effect on the site teams and management

I founded Build Better to focus on prevention. For the final six years of my service, I specialised in designing and delivering advanced training packages within the Metropolitan Police. These programs were developed specifically to enhance operational performance and human reliability in high-pressure environments. My work in this field was formally recognised through Commendations, marking a proven track record of driving professional standards and performance. By using an investigative lens, I help you identify the subtle "warning lights"—such as fatigue or detachment—that can precede a safety lapse.

I don’t just consult on wellbeing; I help you protect your people, your leadership, and the continuity of your project

That operational background is the lens through which everything else is applied.

It is supported by a structured professional framework across four practice areas:

Human Risk & Site Safety NEBOSH HSE Certificate (Level 3) the industry-recognised standard in health and safety management, applied here specifically to human behavioural risk on site.

Wellbeing Coaching & Mental Health Level 4 Health and Wellbeing Coach, qualified to deliver structured, goal-focused wellbeing support in professional and occupational settings. Level 2 Certificate in Mental Health Awareness, underpinning the facilitation of mental health conversations and workforce education.

Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, enabling empathetic, active listening and structured communication during sensitive workforce conversations.

Physical & Musculoskeletal Health Qualified Massage Therapist and Yoga Teacher, providing the trade-specific physical maintenance advice that sits at the core of the Build Better

physical programme.

Level 2 Certificate in Health and Nutrition, supporting the whole-body approach to workforce readiness.

Education & Training Delivery Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), qualified to design and deliver structured learning in professional environments, ensuring every session is purposeful, engaging, and measurable.
